Cars That Make Me Want To Move To Japan: Jimny

Tiny 4wd trucks are a thing of the past here in the USA. It is a true disappointment. Basic, affordable, compact, and durable. AND a manual (!???) transmission. What else do you want to go off road?! Even our ‘small’ truck segment is huge compared to this Jimny.

If we could get these back for a reasonable amount of money I’d be lining up to buy one. I love the super compact truck segment just as long as I wouldn’t have to drive it everyday. Or drive my family of four around. Or put anything bigger than a small Shiti cooler inside...

Ahem, your brief escape from life below:

23 minutes in a language you probably can’t understand. Oyasumi!

I’m not a truck/SUV guy, but I would LOVE a Jimny....would be the perfect cheap, basic, manual , trusty unpretentious year-round vehicle for Canada. :)

They’re so similar to what we all strive to own. Basic and durable. Plus small and go everywhere. We should have a petition to bring them back to North America. I’ll sign it.

If trucks keep getting bigger and more expensive they’ll make a market beneath themselves. $47,601 average transaction price for a truck now.

Someone has to bring a cheaper option at some point. Theres a market for it.

A two door Jeep Wrangler isn’t too much larger than a Jimny, with the added benefit of a removable roof. Just sayin’...

As much as I want that to be true, 84 or even 96 month financing is so accessible now that I can’t see that happening.

The F150 isn’t that much bigger than a new Ranger yet that is going to happen. Why can’t this?!

Yeah, but the new Ranger is big compared to the old Ranger.

I’m down for a Jimmy/PajeroJr/Blizzard being brought over- problem is that most topheavy North Americans can’t handle a small tall slow off-road rig without a lesson on physics..

Look what happened to the Sami..

We certainly don’t have the drivers exam the Japanese do. Or the strong  cultural mindset to be a good citizen on the road. Laws? We have those?

I swear every Jimny driver I see always has a smile on their face, they are just such fun cars. Here in Chile they are quite popular as the Wrangler is  way too expensive for most people.

Good to know! You guys get some interesting stuff we never see (of course you’d probably say the same thing). Those Mazda pickup, Ford Everest, and all sorts of other cheap 4wd vehicles. We’re spoiled with the big, plush stuff that requires a 96 month loan...

We wanted small light trucks. Instead we get a full-size F150 with four doors and an even smaller bed.

America, what the hell?

Short version: drove a Jimny in Iceland, in the winter, in blizzard, in the dead of night. Was amazing the entire time!

Oz is getting them too. Somewhere around AU$25,000 driveaway...so about half the price of mid spec Ranger or off road capable version of the Wrangler . Slightly bigger in every dimension than the current Jimny.

You guys get a lot of Japanese cars we don’t... Then again I’ve met a couple guys from down under on a walk about for American car parts. One guy flew all the way for a swap meet and then to confront a guy who defrauded him of $700 for a windshield that was never delivered. I reminded him not to make a scene and ‘we have guns’ in this country. He laughed and said ‘we have some too in ours’.

Yeah we never got many US cars because of the LHD thing. Not convinced we missed out on much though.

As for the guns thing...meh. The idiot quotient is probably the same both in the US and here. So t he actual risk of a gun being pulled on a Aussie (or anyone else in that matter) in a s ituation like this is pretty small...so why fear it? Being ripped off is far more fucking annoying!!

It was so good. We drove through some VERY sketchy roads (I grew up in the mountains in Alberta...), and it did very well. I also drove it through about 1.5-2' deep snow drifts, with confidence, for fun.
